Patriots Expected to Lead NFL in Wins Next Season
Despite losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl, the season odds for the New England Patriots to win the Super Bowl next season is the best in the league, even better than the team that defeated them.
For those who don’t pay much attention to football, the Patriots odds to win the Super Bowl being better than the Eagles doesn’t make a lot of sense, but for those who have been paying attention, it does.
Since 2001, the Patriots have played in eight Super Bowls, winning five of them. Last season, they missed an opportunity to tie the Pittsburgh Steelers, who lead the NFL with six Super Bowl trophies. But since they have played in three of the last four Super Bowls, there’s no point doubting how good they are.
In addition to being the favorites to win the Super Bowl, the Patriots are also projected to finish the season with the most wins this year. The over/under on their total number of wins is 11, ahead of the Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers, who are both projected to win 10.5 games.
For those planning on betting on the total number of wins the Patriots will have, it is a good idea to go with the over because unless one of their stars suffers a significant injury, the Patriots winning more than 11 games is a lock.
The Patriots finished over last year, leading the league with 13 wins. The year before, they did the same thing and led the league with 14 wins. In fact, the Patriots have won more than 10 games in the last eight seasons.
Since Belichick took over as coach, the Patriots have won 10 or more games 16 times, and have won less than 10 games twice in 18 years.
One of the reasons the team’s over/under on games won is so low this season is the fact that the odds makers are expecting the team to be worse because of reports that have been coming out of the Patriots camp for a while.
According to the reports, there is a power struggle between Belichick and Brady, but that didn’t stop them from winning 13 games and making the Super Bowl for the second consecutive year. Another reason is the fact that Brady will turn 41 by the time the regular season starts.
While Brady’s age is a legitimate reason for concern, he didn’t look like he was slowing down en route to winning the MVP award last season and throwing for over 500 yards in the Super Bowl.
Brady is known for sticking to a strict diet that has allowed him to play longer than most would have expected, and since he showed no sign his age is slowing him down last year, there’s no reason to believe he can’t lead the team to more than 10 wins this season.
Another reason the Patriots will likely win more than 10 games this season is the fact that they have a relatively easy schedule. Since the AFC East will still be one of the easiest divisions in the league, the Patriots should be able to get five or six wins against their division rivals.
With games against teams like the Detroit Lions, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Tennessee Titans and Houston Texans on their schedule, they should be able to get more than 10 wins overall.
