Eagles and Patriots Have Best Odds of Winning Respective Conferences
The Philadelphia Eagles defeated the New England Patriots to win their first Super Bowl title, a feat that was more impressive because they were able to win the Super Bowl with their backup quarterback, Nick Foles, who won the Super Bowl MVP Award.
Despite last season’s success, the Eagles aren’t the favorites to win the Super Bowl this year. Due to the fact that they have Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Rob Gronkowski coming back next season, and the fact that they have played in three of the last four Super Bowls, the New England Patriots odds to win the Super Bowl is the best in the league this season.
As expected, fans of the Eagles aren’t too happy that their team isn’t the favorite to repeat since they are expected to have the core of their team back this year, with a healthy Carson Wentz to lead the way. However, the Eagles aren’t the only team to feel disrespected by the latest odds, which gave some non-playoff teams better odds to win the Super Bowl than some teams that made the playoffs last year.
The Pittsburgh Steelers, who finished tied with the best record in the league last year but flamed out in their first playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, have the second best record to win the AFC at +400.
As expected, Jaguars fans are upset that their team, which defeated the Steelers twice last season, have worse odds to win the AFC than the Steelers at +900. Even the Houston Texans, who finished last in the AFC South last season, have better odds to win the AFC (+850) than the Jaguars.
The Titans, who finished second in the AFC South and won a playoff game last season, have the 10th best odds to win the AFC this season at +1500, which is surprising because the Kansas City Chiefs, the team they defeated in the playoffs, has better odds at +1100. The Chiefs go into next season with a new quarterback, while the Titans are returning their core from last season.
In the NFC, the Eagles have the best odds to win it all at +400. They are followed by the Minnesota Vikings, who acquired Kirk Cousins in the offseason and have one of the best defenses in the league, at +550.
The Los Angeles Rams, who surprised a lot of people by winning the NFC West last season, have the third best odds at +600. The Rams, who already had a very good defense last season, are expected to be even better this year with their acquisitions of Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters and Ndamukong Suh.
With so much talent on defense and a very good offense, the Rams might be the best value pick before the season starts.
Surprisingly, the Green Bay Packers, who missed the playoffs due to an injury to Aaron Rodgers, has better odds of winning the NFC (+600) than the New Orleans Saints, who won the NFC South (+900). Even the San Francisco 49ers, who won six games last season, have better odds of winning the conference (+1200), than the Carolina Panthers (+1400), Dallas Cowboys, (+1400) and the Seattle Seahawks, +2000.
