Despite Having to Fight for Roster Spot Again, Langi Glad to Be Back
Last season,Harvey Langi, a rookie linebacker for the New England Patriots, had one of the toughest rookie seasons in the league. And after beating the odds to make the 53 man roster last season, plans to do it again this year.
Despite losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl last season, the Patriots odds to win the Super Bowl this year is the best in the league, and Langi is hoping to be a one of the players that helps the franchise win its sixth Lombardi trophy.
Last season, After Langi made the 53 man roster, he appeared in the team’s second game of the season, a 36-20 win over the New Orleans Saints, making one tackle. Unfortunately, that would be Langi’s only appearance for the Patriots last season, after ending the season on the injured reserve list.
Last October, Langi and his wife were involved in a life-threatening car accident in which he suffered injuries to his head and neck, and his wife suffered broken ribs and a fractgured hip. The couple had stopped at a traffic light, when they were rear ended by another car. They were transported to a local clinic where their injuries were treated.
During the Patriots’ OTAs, Langi gave reporters an update about the accident, telling them that his wife was fully recovered from her injuries and that he was grateful to be able to put on his helmet and try to help the Patriots win games.
Now that he is fully recovered from the injuries, Langi has to fight for a spot on the 53 man roster once more, but doesn’t seem daunted by the task. He told reporters that he has moved on from the past and is just glad to be out on the field doing what he loves, and plans on bringing a lot of energy to the team every day.
Unlike last season, it will be harder for Langi to make the 53 man roster because the Patriots have quite a few bodies on the defensive edge. Even if the linebacker corps isn’t as talented as it was last year, the competition is expected to be tougher because they have a lot of players competing for the same spot.
Langi, who has overcome tougher odds in his life, isn’t worried about a little competition.
Langi told reporters that he comes from a big family, and is one of 10 kids, seven of whom are boys. As expected, Langi and his brothers competed a lot, so it’s something that he is used to doing all his life, which is why it doesn’t bother him that he has to fight for his spot on the team once again.
After the accident he and his wife suffered last year, Langi is just glad that he gets to put on a helmet and is still able to play football.
Langi said the accident was a setback, but he has put it in the past and tells anyone that asks that he is just glad the accident wasn’t worse than it was. His main goal now is to make the Patriots 53 man roster and help the team win another Super Bowl this season.
